about
Bram Weijters' Crazy Men is a thrilling take on Belgian jazz-rock and fusion from the 1970s. Consisting of musicians from a wide array of contemporary jazz bands including Lucid Lucia (ex BRZZVLL), Dans Dans, STUFF. and Cargo Mas, the ensemble is led by Antwerp based piano and keyboard player, Bram Weijters.
On a continuous quest to explore the roots of early Belgian jazz rock, the spark for this very special collaborative project was ignited by the reissue of composer, arranger, pianist, and keyboardist Koen de Bruyne’s 1974 rare Belgian gem, ‘Here Comes the Crazy Man!’ via Sdban Records in 2015, which spawned the release of Bram Weijters' Crazy Men’s debut album ‘Here They Come’ in 2019.
Continuing their obsession with premium experimental jazz-rock, new album ‘The Return’ takes further inspiration from the period with 14 reworking’s of compositions from artists including Philip Catherine, Placebo, Palle Mikelborg ensemble, Bob Porter, Cos and Koen de Bruyne.
'Planes' was inspired by the track from the Placebo live performances ‘Placebo Live In Temse’ (1972) and ‘Placebo Live In Bruxelles’ (1973).
Adventurous hybrid jazz at its best. I struggle to describe why this stands out above a crowd, but... It all sounds so precise. Every instrument fills its own space so that, as busy as it gets, it never feels crowded. It breathes easy while full of energy. In case I'm not making sense, this, in short, is brilliant. Added bonus that the vocal track doesn't stand out negatively as those too often do on otherwise instrumental albums. Heavy rotation, and the best jazz-related album of 2022. rvss.eel
I have been beating around the bush for some time now with this band.
Now I realise it was my own pride that resisted the purchase; This band is greater than I..... This band knows exactly what I like, it feels already what I want to feel in music. I just wasn't ready yet to meet them. I should have trusted this fantastic label. The title of the album says it all......... PlayItLoud!
Very cinematic, overall rich and colorful soundscapes. Combined with that groove and sense for psychedelic moments these songs are irresistible to get lost in. Looking forward to the full release Tim
